Lake Manyara National Park
National Park · Rift Valley, Northern Tanzania

Lake Manyara National Park

A narrow strip between the Rift Valley escarpment and a soda lake, known for tree-climbing lions and some of the best birding on the circuit.

Lake Manyara is compact — a thin band of groundwater forest, acacia woodland and open floodplain squeezed between the Rift Valley wall and the lake itself — but it packs in a genuine variety of habitat for its size. It's usually the easiest park on the itinerary, a good first or second stop that rewards a half-day rather than demanding several.

The park's best-known quirk is its lions, some of which climb trees — a behaviour seen in only a handful of places in Africa and not fully explained even by researchers, though escaping biting insects and heat on the ground is the leading theory. The lake itself, when water levels are right, draws large flocks of flamingo and other waterbirds.

Why visit Lake Manyara
  • —Tree-climbing lions, a genuine behavioural rarity seen in very few places in Africa
  • —Excellent, easy birding across forest, floodplain and lakeshore habitat in a small area
  • —A gentle, accessible park that works well as a half-day stop between longer drives
  • —Dramatic Rift Valley escarpment scenery as a backdrop to the lake

Wildlife & landscape

  • —Lion — some individuals here are known to climb into acacia trees, unusual behaviour for the species
  • —Flamingo and pelican — present in large numbers on the lake when water levels allow
  • —Blue monkey and olive baboon — common in the groundwater forest near the park entrance
  • —Elephant, buffalo and hippo along the floodplain and lakeshore

Signature experiences

The groundwater forest drive

The park entrance road runs through dense, shaded forest fed by underground springs off the escarpment — a cooler, greener start to the drive than most of the circuit's open plains.

Lakeshore birding

When water levels are favourable, the lake's soda flats draw large numbers of flamingo alongside pelican, stork and a long list of waterbirds — a rewarding stop for anyone with even a passing interest in birds.

Getting there

Lake Manyara is around two hours' drive from Arusha, on the same road toward Ngorongoro and the Serengeti — it's almost always visited as a stop on a longer driving safari rather than on its own.

How long to stay

Half a day to one night is typical. It's rarely the main event of a Tanzania trip, but it's an efficient, worthwhile stop given how little it adds to a driving itinerary that's already headed toward Ngorongoro.

Where to stay

A handful of lodges sit on the escarpment above the park with views down over the lake, alongside more affordable options in the nearby town of Mto wa Mbu. Most guests here stay one night at most before continuing on. See our lodges and camps.

Travel tips

  • —Don't over-allocate time here — a half-day drive covers the park well given its size
  • —Lake water levels vary significantly year to year, which affects flamingo numbers more than the calendar month does
  • —Bring binoculars — the birding rewards patience more than distance covered

Frequently asked questions

Will I definitely see the tree-climbing lions?

No sighting in the wild is guaranteed, and this behaviour isn't universal even among Manyara's lions — but our guides know the areas where it's been seen most consistently and will route your drive accordingly.

Is Lake Manyara worth a full day?

For most itineraries, half a day is enough — it's a smaller, more concentrated park than the Serengeti or Tarangire. We usually pair it with the drive toward Ngorongoro rather than dedicating a separate day to it.
