Arusha National Park

A compact, varied park on Arusha's doorstep — Momella's lakes, Ngurdoto Crater and the lower slopes of Mount Meru, best known for its walking safaris.

Arusha National Park is the one on this list most people haven't heard of before they arrive, and the one most easily added without costing a travel day — it sits close enough to the city and airport that it works as a half-day trip on either end of a longer safari, rather than a destination in itself.

It's also one of the few parks in Tanzania where guided walking safaris and canoe trips are routinely permitted, since it holds fewer dangerous predators than the bigger northern parks. That makes it a genuinely different kind of morning: on foot with an armed ranger, or paddling among hippo and waterbirds on the Momella lakes, with Kilimanjaro visible on a clear day.

Why visit Arusha National Park
  • —One of the few parks where guided walking safaris are routinely available
  • —Canoeing on the Momella lakes, among hippo, flamingo and other waterbirds
  • —Close enough to Arusha to add on without using a full travel day
  • —Clear-day views of both Kilimanjaro and Mount Meru from within the same park

Wildlife & landscape

  • —Giraffe, buffalo and zebra across the park's open grassland and Momella lakes area
  • —Black-and-white colobus monkey in the montane forest on Mount Meru's lower slopes
  • —Hippo and flamingo around the Momella lakes
  • —No resident lion population, which is part of why walking and canoe safaris are possible here

Signature experiences

A guided walking safari

With an armed ranger required by park rules but genuinely useful for reading tracks and signs, a walk here is a different pace and perspective from a vehicle-based game drive elsewhere on the circuit.

Canoeing the Momella lakes

A quiet paddle among hippo pods and waterbirds, usually arranged as a half-day activity rather than a full day, with Kilimanjaro or Meru often visible in the background on a clear morning.

Getting there

The park gate is around 25–40 minutes from Arusha city and Kilimanjaro International Airport, making it the easiest addition on this list — most guests visit either on arrival, before heading out to the main circuit, or on a free day at the end of a trip.

How long to stay

Half a day covers a walking safari or canoe trip comfortably. It's not designed to be a multi-night stay on most itineraries, though a night at one of the small lodges on the park boundary is possible for anyone wanting to linger.

Where to stay

Most guests treat this as a day trip from Arusha rather than an overnight stop, though a small number of lodges sit on the park's edge for those who'd rather not rush the visit. See our lodges and camps.

Travel tips

  • —Ask us to add this as a half-day activity around your arrival or departure — it rarely needs its own dedicated night
  • —Bring sturdy walking shoes if you're doing the walking safari
  • —It's a good option for shaking off jet lag or filling a gap day before a Kilimanjaro climb

Frequently asked questions

Do any of your safari itineraries already include Arusha National Park?

Not by default — none of our listed sample itineraries route through it as a stop. It's a genuinely worthwhile half-day addition, though, and we can build it into almost any trip on request, particularly around your arrival or departure day.

Is Arusha National Park worth visiting if I've already seen the Serengeti and Ngorongoro?

It's a different kind of morning rather than a bigger version of the same thing — the appeal is the walking safari and canoeing, not head-to-head game density with the bigger parks.
